Haboobing

"ha-boob-ing", verb: The act of being a weather nut.

About

Haboobing. A funny word.

It’s not really a word though. Well, a portion of it is: Haboob. Wikipedia has a fairly clear definition of it:

“…an intense sandstorm commonly observed in the Sahara desert…”

Also seen many, many times every summer in Phoenix, Arizona, where I live. When the heat sets in, so does the monsoon season out here, which is a yearly event that creates thunderstorms throughout the state on a daily basis. Depending on how dry it’s been, these storms are usually preceded by a wall of dust that can blot out the sky if they’re bad enough. See the below picture:

So what the heck does “haboobing” mean and where did it come from?

The short answer is that it means you’re a nut when it comes to following weather and…I made it up. The long answer is that I was looking for a unique name to use for a weather blog and being from Arizona, that’s what I came up with.

If you love the idea of gobbling up everything you can about the weather, then I say you are haboobing. This blog is my way of haboobing.

I plan on haboobing as often as I can. Speaking of me, who is me?

My name is Mike and I’m a haboober (oooh, new derivation!). Being from Arizona kind of sucks in a way, because while we get the strong monsoons in the summer, the chances of severe, severe weather is fairly slim. But that’s probably why I love the weather so much. I dream of being in places that actually have it.

I’m a storm-chaser-chaser if you will. I spend many a day during the summer watching those crazy storm chasers romp through the midwest and see amazing things.

I have my own weather station on Wunderground.com, but it’s just a basic one. I hope to have a better one someday, but maybe when I move someplace more open.

The vision for this blog is just to be an outlet for me to talk about the weather. I hope it becomes a community in a way, where we can chit-chat about how the weather has been, share photos and learn together. I’m no expert but I pretend to be one online.

Hope you enjoy the blog and let me know if you have any questions by emailing me.
