Rainband Monsoon sunset

Wanted to add this photo I just found on Wunderground taken by Larry Smit in Phoenix. I assume since it’s around sunset, he took it around the desert area in northwest Phoenix. There was a lingering storm that developed around that side of town so I’m guessing he shot through it towards the west.
Beautiful.

First lightning shot of the 2009 Monsoon season

I’m not sure about his real name, but his website and handle on Wunderground is Jhaz. His website is Jhaz Photography, but I don’t see a lot of updates.
Whatever the case, he takes amazing lightning shots from around the Tucson, Arizona area. We had our first batch of real monsoon action yesterday, even if it [...]

Weather photos of the day for 6/28/09

Found some more astounding lightning photos while perusing Wunderground today. This guy Rick Hovanec takes some remarkable shots, despite saying he was “winging it” on some of them.
Makes me want to get a good camera that has the ability to keep the shutter open for a certain amount of time.
Here’s a few of Rick’s lightning [...]

More chances for rain in Phoenix today

I was in Las Vegas the last two days and somehow the monsoon really didn’t strike Phoenix while I was gone. Cloudy yesterday, but it just sprinkled around town and no rain registered at my house in Chandler.
But today looks promising. They are saying the best chance is in the higher elevations, but the flow [...]

Chance of storms in Phoenix this week

We Phoenicians have been waiting a long time for the monsoon season to kick off and now it looks like it will happen tomorrow and the rest of the week.
Today there is a slight chance, but Thursday, Friday and Saturday things will get more humid and the storms will start popping up everywhere.
The forecast maps [...]

Dad films tornado as kids scream in the car

This video from Weather.com of a dad filming a rope tornado while his car full of kids and his wife (I believe), is dang funny.
The screaming that starts when you can actually see the ground starting to get nailed is hysterical. I have a feeling if I were in this guy’s position, I would probably [...]

Andres becomes first hurricane of the season

We can now officially call it Hurricane Andres as sustained wind speeds of 75mph have been reached by the storm. Sadly, there has already been a confirmed death blamed on Andres.
The hurricane is supposed to falter soon and drop back down to a tropical storm while it heads back out into the Pacific. From the [...]
